Overview
Veterans Day is an understandably important event each year for an organization like ours. In Ipswich it offers the additional opportunity to gather together with our comrades from other veterans organizations and to welcome the community to our facility.
2009 Events
This year we had a terrific line up of activities. We began with a breakfast at the First Church on Sunday morning. Coordinated by Post 1093 member and First Church parishioner Bruce Bryant, veterans were warmly welcome and wonderfully fed. Thanks to the First Church for the appreciation and hospitality!
Official events on Wednesday began with our annual gathering at the War Memorial. This year Commander Graffum (Amnerican Legion) took point and orchestrated the ceremony. All four of our local veterans organizations and their auxiliaries were represented and they were joined by our selectmen, the fire department who rendered honors at 11:00 AM, Boy and Girl Scouts, Mr. Dolan and Tess Hannah of the High School Band (who played Echoes and Flourishes), a squad of Patior Riders and several active duty service people. An impressive gathering of citizens joined us in honoring our veterans.
Following a parade from the War Memorial to the VFW a brief ceremony was held during which State Rep Brad Hill read and presented the Governor's annual proclamation to Commander Bill Duke. The scouts helped to raise the flag and the Brownies led the group in a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.
Refreshments were provided in the VFW hall for all who wished to partake, and many stories were overheard during conversations among veterans in the club. (Naturally the former marines in the group were still celebrating the Corp's 234th birthday from the day prior!) The refreshments included cupcakes which were provided under a creative program by
Christopher's Table of Ipswich. Customers were invited to "sponsor" cupcakes for a token fee. The restaurant then made them from scratch and delivered them to the VFW, complete with patriotic decorations, for the enjoyment of all participants.
After a brief respite many of the participating veterans then adjourned to the 1640 Hart House which hosted an incredibly generous veterans recognition event. With a wonderful meal donated, and volunteer employees, the Hart House further cemented its place in the hearts of Ipswich Veterans with a delightful and much appreciated afternoon.
And for those veterans who needed more chow and desert, Peter and Harry, owners of Dairy Queen donated gift certificates for free ice cream and several folks headed off to Applebees for their free entree offer. It was indeed a fulfilling day all around!
